Alongside an existing OBS

You are reading the documentation for version 1.1.8. Go to the current version (1.2.0)

This page is for computers that already have OBS Studio. In short, the setup does not change your OBS, but you must not run both programs at the same time.

What the installation does to your OBS

The installation does not change your OBS. It does not rename, reconfigure, upgrade or downgrade it.

Ultimate Playout is a separate installation in its own folder, with its own configuration. Your OBS therefore keeps its scenes, plugins, settings and updates, while Ultimate Playout does not update itself (see the pinned engine). The operator sees Ultimate Playout and not OBS, as described in what the operator sees.

The one rule

Do not run the two programs at the same time.

When both run together, they overwrite each other’s configuration. For the same reason, the setup does not install while OBS is running.

In practice, this means that you close one program before you start the other. If someone does run both, you notice that settings change back without a clear reason.

For a control-room computer

The best setup is a computer without OBS, because a computer with one task is easier to keep in working order than a computer that is also used for other things during the week.

If both must be installed, put a note at the desk: close the other one first. It is the only rule that you need to remember.
