A file is missing

A cue refers to a file that is no longer there. This page takes you through the steps to correct that. The background, and the way to prevent the problem, are described in missing files in part 2.

Read the path first

Each affected line in the list has a warning mark, and its tooltip shows the full path that the cue is looking for. The path shows what is wrong, so read it before you do anything else.

The path showsUsual cause
A folder that was renamed or movedThe material was moved. Move it back, or point the cue to the new location
A drive letter that is not availableA network share is not connected
The Documents or Downloads folder of another personThe list came from another computer
A file that no longer existsThe file was deleted

How to correct it

If the files were moved, put them back where the list expects them. This is quicker than editing cues, and it corrects every affected line at once.

If the material has moved permanently, open the properties of the cue and select the new location.

If the list came from another computer, you need a bundle instead of a list. Ask for a .playoutbundle, which contains the media. See bundles.

If the file no longer exists, replace it. You can also move the line to the archive, so that it is no longer in the running order.

During a broadcast

A cue with a missing file shows black. The playout does not crash and the list does not stop, so the show continues with nothing shown for that item.

During a service, therefore, skip the cue: arm the next cue and continue, and correct the problem afterwards.

How to prevent it

Open the list once, well in advance, on the computer that will run it. The program then reports the missing files in a message, which leaves you enough time to correct them. It does not check the files again when you press GO.
