The picture of a playout can be a source in a scene, so that one playout shows what another playout is broadcasting, for example as a picture-in-picture, on a monitor wall, or as a small picture in a corner.
Adding the source
In the scene builder, add a source of the type Ultimate Playout, and set Playout to show.
The source then shows the live picture of that playout at the position where you place it in the scene.
The sound follows the picture
While a scene that shows another playout is on air, you also hear the sound of that playout on the playout that shows it. The sound stops when the scene is no longer on air.
You can switch this off with Include that playout’s sound, a checkbox on the source that is on by default. Switch it off for a small picture in a corner that you want to see but not hear.
Slides and speaker in one picture
A common use is a picture-in-picture with the slides and the speaker side by side.
This needs two playouts. Each slide is a cue, such as a still or a step in a stills playlist, and you cannot place a cue beside a camera in a scene. You can place a whole playout there, though.
Set it up as follows:
- Playout 1 runs the slides, as stills or as a stills playlist. The operator steps through the slides here.
- Playout 2 gets a scene cue with two sources. The first is an Ultimate Playout source set to playout 1, which shows the slides. The second is the camera on the speaker. Size and place the sources as you like, for example a large slide with the speaker in a corner, or half the picture for each.
- Playout 2 goes to the hall and the stream.
When you go to the next slide on playout 1, the picture inside the frame changes, but playout 2 does not switch. The sound of playout 1, for example from a clip between the slides, is also heard, as described above.
If you place two of these sources in one scene, two playouts appear side by side in the same picture.
To use a different layout during the same talk, create several scene cues on playout 2, for example one with a large slide, one with a large speaker and one with the speaker full screen. You then switch between them on playout 2, while playout 1 continues to run the slides.
Protection against feedback
A source can show a playout while the scene with that source is a cue on the same playout. The picture would then contain itself without end, so in that case the source stays black. In all other cases, it works normally.
If you see a black rectangle where you expect a picture, this is almost always the cause: the scene with the source is on air on the playout that the source shows.
When to use it
| Situation | How |
|---|---|
| A small picture of the stream on the screen in the hall | A scene on playout 2 with playout 1 as a source |
| A monitor wall with two playouts side by side | One scene with two of these sources |
| A “coming up” corner during a break | A scene that combines a still and a live playout |
| Slides and the speaker in one picture | The slides on playout 1. On playout 2, a scene with that source and the camera |
When not to use it
Do not use it to copy one playout to two outputs. If two outputs need the same picture, use one playout that supplies two destinations.
Do not use it as a preview of another playout. Each playout already has its own preview panel, and a source needs rendering that the preview does not.
