This page covers the In and Out columns: playing part of a file instead of all of it. Nothing is cut, converted or re-saved — the trim lives in the rundown, so the same file can appear three times with three different trims.
Setting them
Both columns are minutes and seconds in separate boxes. Click, type, tab to the next box.
- In — where the cue starts. Leave it at
00:00to start at the beginning. - Out — where the cue ends. This is the point playback stops, not a length.
The Out box fills itself in with the full duration as soon as the file has been read, so a fresh list already tells you how long the show is. An out point you set yourself is never overwritten.
What the trim affects
Everything downstream reads the trimmed length, not the file length:
- The countdown on the transport bar counts to your out point.
- Follow actions fire at the out point.
- The timeline in the transport bar spans in to out.
So a forty-minute recording trimmed to a three-minute excerpt behaves in every respect like a three-minute clip.
Trimming during a show
You can change an out point while the cue is on air; the new value applies from that moment. Useful when a live speaker is running long and the clip after them has to lose its tail.
Changing the in point of a cue that is already playing does not jump the playhead — use the timeline in the transport bar to scrub instead.
What it does not do
- It does not modify the file. Nothing is written back, ever.
- It does not travel as a new file: exporting a bundle copies the original media, and the trim stays a property of the rundown.
- It is not frame-accurate down to the frame number. The boxes are seconds, which is the resolution a rundown works in; for frame-exact work, trim in an editor and drop the result in.
Stills and other cues without a timeline
A still has no file duration, so the Out box sets how long it stays before its follow action fires. Leave it at 00:00 and the still waits for a GO — see Follow actions.
